Wellness Your Way

Time to read 7 min

It’s February, and if the past month has taught us anything, it’s that we have to take our health into our own hands. We’ve already seen our rights stripped away, our communities under attack by this new administration, and devastating fires in LA. The world around us feels heavy, and the stress of it all is real. But while we can’t control everything happening outside, we can choose to care for ourselves – on our own terms.

This month, we’re embracing Wellness Your Way. That means prioritizing your mental, physical, and spiritual well-being in a way that actually works for you. Not what the wellness industry tells you. Not what social media trends push. What you need to feel good, to feel strong, to feel whole. And as we honor Black History Month, we can also look to our ancestors – the healers, the caregivers, the warriors – who found ways to nourish themselves and their communities. Their power and knowledge live in us, too.

In this article, we’ll break down how to set your wellness goals in a way that’s sustainable and meaningful for your life. Whether that means finding small moments of peace, nourishing your body in ways that bring you joy, or simply giving yourself permission to rest, your wellness journey is yours to define.

Intention Setting on What You Desire

The first step to your journey of wellness is setting intentions for what you desire. No one else can tell you what path to take, so spend some quality time with yourself to discover what intentions you wish to set. This can feel overwhelming but remember to have fun and welcome goodness into your practice. Here are some tips and tricks on discovering and setting your desired intentions for wellness.

Get Inspired

Seek out inspiration through ways that feel intuitive to you. Whether that is through art, nature, or learning something new; these methods can spark new connections in your heart and inch you closer to what you truly desire.

  1. Be honest with yourself about what you enjoy  - Oftentimes we believe that doing things that might look good to other people but aren’t truly fulfilling to our soul. Follow your inner light and go towards what speaks to you. If it doesn’t work out then you know you tried and it isn’t for you. If it ends up being for you, then fabulous! - you’ve unlocked a new facet of yourself. No matter the outcome, add it to your intention setting practice.
  2. Experiment Without Spending a Dime - Inspiration doesn’t have to be a grand showcase of wealth. Inspiration can come for free or be extremely affordable. Here are my favorite methods of finding inspiration on a budget.
  • Watching a documentary/movie or reading a book about a topic that inspires me
  • Visiting museums for the day with a notepad and my phone turned off ○ Walking around the town and observing sights and sounds
  • Doing chores while listening to a podcast about something I’ve been wanting to learn
  • Attending workshops and events in my local community for free or cheap

All of these activities are affordable, like going to community events. Or even free, thanks to the library which offers books, movies, and even museum passes to check out. No matter your budget, inspiration is out there and you just have to be open to it!

Put your intentions into the universe

Once you have your intentions in your heart, it is time to manifest them into the physical. Let your intentions be known by engaging your senses and creating.

  1. Engage with your mind’s eye - Time yourself for five minutes and envision what your purest moment of wellness looks like. Write down what the sensation comes to you: what visions you have, how your body feels, what smells come to you, what you hear. By engaging your mind’s eye you transport yourself to that moment of getting what you truly wanted.
  2. Create a vision board - Gather your art supplies and exercise your creative muscles by making a vision board. The visuals will aid in imprinting the words, photos, and goals you have for 2025 into your consciousness as you gaze upon the board everyday. Place it in your bedroom or by the front door of your home so you always see it at least once a day. (Pro tip: make this your lock screen so every time you reach for your phone, you consider if you’re picking up your phone to get closer to your wellness goal.)
  3. Write a letter to yourself to open in 2026 - Writing a letter about hopes, aspirations, and dreams is a great way to lay the framework for the upcoming year. Detail what intentions you have and lay it all on the page. Furthermore, write what positive actions and situations have taken place in 2024. Whether you moved to your dream location, found love, or simply read a book once a month; celebrate your accomplishments from this year and remind your future self how magnificent you are. I have done this technique for the past four New Years and it is always a treat to look back and see where I was at in life (and how far I’ve come).

Actionable Steps to Move into Wellness

Begin with the (Holistic) Basics

The final step into fostering wellness is developing actionable steps to begin, maintain, and actualize your new routine.

1. Body - Taking care of your body is the first step to beginning wellness. Though you aren’t entirely your physical body, there is an importance of taking care of your body if you want to develop a wellness routine. Here are some questions to check in with your body.

  • When was the last time you cleansed your body?
  • Washed your clothing?
  • Ate a nourishing meal?

These physically based questions, though seem basic, are paramount in working towards greater wellness.

2. Mind - Discussions around mental wellness have skyrocketed over the past years. People are more open discussing their struggles and getting help to manage their mental health. Here are questions to jumpstart thinking about your mental wellness.

  • When was the last time you expressed your feelings in a journal (or to a trusted person)?
  • How do you cope with stress?
  • What is giving your life meaning?

Honestly answer these questions and reflect on your responses. If you feel like these questions can’t be answered right now, that’s okay. These answers are ever-changing as you embark on this wellness journey. Reach out to a trained professional if you need support along the way.

3. Spirit - Connecting to something greater than yourself; like the universe, God, or humanity, can be an important aspect of your wellness. This section is about spiritual wellness which can bring deep peace and joy to people’s lives. Some questions to ask yourself about your spirituality (if you practice it).

  • Do you practice meditation or prayer? If so, when was the last time you did it?
  • When was the last time you spent quality time in nature?
  • How can you do good or volunteer your time in your community?

Spirituality is highly personalized and if this is the first time exploring these feelings, take your time. There is no rush and allow yourself to just be in the emotions of discovering spiritual wellness. If need be, reach out to a spiritual leader or community for support.

What were your answers?

If the answer to these questions and any of the other sections feels like “I don’t remember” or “I don’t know”, work towards baby steps to accomplish your goals. Having patience, understanding, and love for yourself. These positive affirmations will keep you on the journey of wellness into the new year. It’s just about starting the routine, doing it, and repeating the actions until they become habits. Habits that are started and continued eventually led to lifestyle changes. And to change your life it just requires one step.

Conclusion

As we step further into 2025, let this be the year you define wellness on your own terms. Prioritize what makes you feel good, set goals that actually fit your life, and take small, meaningful steps toward a routine that nourishes your body, mind, and spirit. Wellness isn’t one-size-fits-all, and it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Sometimes, the smallest shifts lead to the biggest transformations.
